New Original Works Festival 2016: Program Three

New Original Works Festival 2016: Program Three

Note: All three works presented each night.

REDCAT's annual New Original Works Festival closes with works by I AM A BOYS CHOIR, Daniel Corral, and Wilfried Souly and Aaron Mason.

I AM A BOYS CHOIR: DEMONSTRATING THE IMAGINARY BODY OR HOW I BECAME AN ICE PRINCESS
With a fair dose of camp and intense physicality inspired by competitive ice-skating and instructional workout videos, a trio of ice princesses in training search for answers about the myth of the female athlete, and the personal quest for validation. Based on a how-to-win system invented by the ultimate ice princess, Kristi Yamaguchi, this rambunctious work features trampolines, blood feuds, sequins, and a lot of Tonya Harding.

DANIEL CORRAL: COMMA
This stunning visualization of music by composer Daniel Corral uses large scale projection of a lighted, electronic instrument in Comma. A grid of bright colors comes to life as Corral executes a compelling score inspired by the additive processes of musical minimalism. Comma is performed in darkness where the only visible shapes are the evolving and shape-shifting lights and the ghostly silhouettes of the musician’s hands.

WILFRIED SOULY: ON BECOMING
Exquisitely blending bold dance with live and pre-recorded music, video and text, choreographer and dancer Wilfried Souly teams up with a collective of dancers to create On Becoming. This gripping dance-theater work explores the kinetic and physical histories of the performer and their ever-evolving identities, reflecting on the way experiences shape the expression of Self across a life span.

The New Original Works Festival is made possible by generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rosenfeld Fund for Special Projects, and REDCAT Circle donors.
