REDCAT's annual New Original Works Festival kicks off with a program of works by Jeepneys, Rebecca Bruno and Mak Kern, and Emily Mast. 

JEEPNEYS, WHITE BOY SCREAM & MIKO REVEREZA: BODY SHIP
Mixing fresh beats and nuanced compositions with vivid video imagery, composer/performers Jeepneys (Anna Luisa Petrisko) and White Boy Scream (Micaela Tobin) team with video artist Miko Revereza to concoct an imaginative multimedia opera fantasy. Two sisters turn their bodies into spaceships for a journey and healing rite that traces Ferdinand Magellan’s explorations, re-routed into the cosmos. These are their preparations.

REBECCA BRUNO & MAK KERN: FOREST
The stage becomes a musical forest of large sculptural chimes, brought to life by inventive choreographer Rebecca Bruno and her performers, to create a compelling visual and sonic experience. Inspired by the captivating formality of dense bamboo forests, Bruno and visual artist Mak Kern create a kinetic architectural environment of steel instruments and supple movement, enhanced by thoughtful stagecraft and dramaturgy. 

EMILY MAST: THE CAGE IS A STAGE
With a hybrid vision that transcends normal categories of visual art, dance and theater, Emily Mast generates tableaux vivants, living sculpture and theatrical scenes to evoke a comparison of zoos to art galleries. Inspired by John Berger’s “Why Look at Animals?,” she explores objectification, animism, and the political implications of marginalization, questioning our cultural understanding of animal nature.
