Studio: Spring 2019
REDCAT's Studio series is an interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Miwa Matreyek and Meena Murugesan and features a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:
LINDSEY LOLLIE: WIND DOWN
In Lindsey Lollie’s Wind Down, giant electric fans propel an unrelenting airstream of turbulence endured by a duo of virtuosic dancers. Caught in the wind, the dancers find both resistance and synchronicity. Set to a sound score by composer Alex Wand, Wind Down explores recovery through PTSD whilst on the path to freedom.
SADIE YARRINGTON: MUSCLE MEMORY
Using the audience as a chorus, choreographer and dancer Sadie Yarrington investigates body memory—how moments in time live in the body and how their retelling has a physical response. Rooted in community experience, Muscle Memory layers set choreography and improvisational structures, wherein both performer and audience impact the creation of the work.
DREW DENNY: ASKING FOR IT
Queer-identified female director, musician and investigative documentarian Drew Denny, aka “Goldie,” turns her gaze inward in Asking for It, a multimedia first-person exploration of domestic violence and partner abuse. Asking for It uncovers how people are conditioned to take on the roles of victim and abuser and the difficulty of dismantling that paradigm, with truths so absurd that all we can do is laugh.
MARINA MAGALHÃES: APOIO | SUPPORT
Drawing from Latinx diaspora ancestral dances (dances of the orixás, samba, merengue, and dance hall) as sites of deep power and resistance, Marina Magalhães’ new duet Apoio |Support is a playful conversation between softness and hardness, vulnerability and strength. Performed to the sound of the dancer’s movement and breath, it features poetry by Afro-Brazilian poet Conceição Evaristo’s “Fêmea-Fênix” (Female-Phoenix).
RIAN JAMES ALCID: MANECDOTES
Dancer and choreographer Rian James Alcid brings together a group of young male-identified dancers as choreographic research to explore conflicting stereotypes of males in both dance and contemporary society. In his bold new quartet manecdotes, a compelling sound score syncopates the choreographic language built from interviews of their experiences as dancers.
JASMINE LIN 林思穎: MORNING EXORCISE
Performance artist Jasmine Lin 林思穎 utilizes the ritualistic repetition of Chinese morning exercises (早操 zâo cāo) to purge the body of oppressive socialized choreographies in Morning Exorcise. They draw from Japanese Butoh and documentary theatre to create a transgressive alternative addressing the experiences, histories, and traumas of their queer body of color.
FISH TO BIRDS: ORGANIZED CHAOS
The intergenerational a cappella group Fish to Birds creates a completely improvised experimental composition in their work Organized Chaos. Fish to Birds' soundscapes blend their unique mix of musical backgrounds—jazz, European classical, Senegalese mbalax, Pinoy music—mixing languages and ideas that shift from performer to performer depending on the moment on stage.
