Studio: Spring 2018
REDCAT's Studio series is an interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Juan Parada and Stacy Dawson Stearns and features a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:
ROSANNA TAVAREZ/LA DANSA DANSA: HYBRIDS OF PLANTS AND OF GHOSTS
Visceral movement is beautifully executed by three performers in Rosanna Tavarez’ visually striking dance theater work inspired by the stamina and spirit of her grandmother, an influential matriarch who was a mother of seven, a street vendor, an immigrant and a fighter. With poetic interviews and movement, they evoke a beloved figure lost to Alzheimer’s.
LORINDA HAWKINS SMITH: JUSTICE? OR JUST ME?
Writer, actor, and activist Lorinda Hawkins Smith’s compelling solo performance Justice? Or Just Me? intricately remixes incisive text and soulful vocal rhythms and textures to examine a Black woman’s encounter with law enforcement, domestic violence and her interracial marriage to a White man.
DAEUN JUNG: WITH PUMPKIN
DaEun Jung likes vegetables — but she loves pumpkin. As the smart and whimsical dancer/choreographer celebrates her emphatic engagement to a pumpkin, she reveals the homogeneity between an inanimate object and her own grounded and flexible body, using a gestural and movement vocabulary inspired by her Korean ancestors.
AMY KAPS: EXPERIMENTS IN STRIPES: INTERRUPTION IN STRIPES
Enveloped in a black and white cloth, interdisciplinary artist Amy Kaps poses, prances and dances against a series of projected black and white optical illusions, creating an altering psychological puzzle. Layered with excerpts from the book The Devil’s Cloth, Kaps’ Experiment in Stripes… is part shadow play, dance, and a history lesson.
ALEX ALMARAZ: A TATTOOED MAN
Virtuosic dancer/ choreographer Alex Almaraz uses hip hop as a starting point for his high octane solo performance A Tattooed Man, which depicts internal conflicts through movement inspired by his work in correctional facilities, where his perceptions were tested, adding a dimension to his relationship with his own tattooed body.
KYREEANA BREELIN, NEDRA WHEELER & VINCI LEWIS: PAID PROGRAMMING: ON THE STAGE TODAY
An interactive live-action event conceived by a mischievous furry teddy-bear ends up revealing the deep and talented connections between tap dancer Kyreeana Breelin, musician/vocalist, Nedra Wheeler, and spoken word artist Vinci Lewis, who jam and improvise a music and movement score that builds to a syncopated harmony.
