REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Stacy Dawson Stearns and Joey Cannizzaro and offers adventurous audiences a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

LISA WAHLANDER: LADYBEAST AND THE IMPERMANENT SKY

Inspired by nature, mythology and outer space, dancer and choreographer Lisa Wahlander exquisitely blurs the line between abstraction and representation, in this shape-shifting new solo work with original score by Bryan Konietzko. 

BRYAN COLLINS: BULLY FAE “DEFY A THING TO BE”

With rhythmic and urgent spoken word and movement, Bryan Collins remixes and revises experimental electronic beats spiced with found noise, percussion and cinematic effects, to explore queerness, abjection, and seduction, through a unique locomotive chatter/rapping/reading.

MYRRHIA RODRIGUEZ: NOW YOU SEE ME?

Using video installation, everyday objects, and bodies – both virtual and actual – Myrrhia Rodriguez leads her quartet of dancers through intimate sequences, phased gestures and beautifully synchronized interdependence, to investigate the many manifestations of a woman’s body as a physical presence as well as a psychological experience.

ALEXIS DISSELKOEN: IN-BETWEEN

Striking visual moments featuring a mother and a young son are interspersed between other performance works in this unique edition of Studio, featuring one-minute stage portraits of Alexis Disselkoen and twelve-year old Lemuel Disselkoen Ignacio, evoking vital moments of connection, love and intimacy.

KITE: PEOPLE YOU MUST LOOK AT ME

In a visual setting created with overhead projections of video and hand drawn mappings of Kyle, South Dakota, Suzanne Kite, of the Oglala Lakota Nation, manipulates a wearable sound/visual apparatus, developed in collaboration with the audio/visual artists James Hurwitz and Devin Ronneberg of “_Field”. 

¡samplista!: RAINBOW FACE

The artists and performers of ¡samplista! use phantasmagorical costume-based performance and video to create an alternate fantasy universe, complete with a stylized boxing ring, where the colorful monsters of Rainbow Face physically express internal conflicts that suggest the internal pressures of systemic oppression vs. the Other.

RACHEL YEZBICK: HOOK AND LOOP 

The distinct sounds of Velcro vs. fabric fill the REDCAT lobby as the four performers of Hook and Loop come together, pull apart and explore various physical and emotional entanglements, while completely covered in industrial-grade velcro suits and masks.
