REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Carole Kim and Mecca Vazie Andrews, and offers adventurous audiences a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

MOIRA MACDONALD & GINA NAPOLITAN: ANATOMY LESSON

On a handmade shadow screen, analog projections, shadow and light are carefully manipulated by puppet artist Moira MacDonald and filmmaker Gina Napolitan in the mini shadow opera Anatomy Lesson, which explores altered mood states, drawing on the text of Julia Kristeva and Robert Burton.

FEDERICO LLACH & GABY GOLDBERG: THIS TIME AROUND

Extraordinary double bass player and composer Federico Llach collaborates with visual artist Gaby Goldberg to explore visual and sonic manifestations of the cycles of nature and its contrasts: the brightest to the darkest colors; the emptiest textures to saturation; the lowest to the highest note – resulting in an intoxicating hip hop-inspired rhythmic groove.

ELENA ROSA: MONOLOGUES FOR MEN #3, 2015

In a visual and haptic environment created with projected images of iconic male characters abstracted by close panning and cropped frames, a young male actor played by Elena Rosa brings life to a monologue from Henrick Ibsen’s “When We Dead Awaken” to create an engaging update of historical ideas of representation in text and on screen.

ROSANNA GAMSON/WORLD WIDE: RESTLESS

Virtuosic, intimate and volatile duets are at the center of choreographer Rosanna Gamson’s dance-theater work Restless, which continues her kinetic investigation of dream states and the neuroscience and history of dreaming. Restless builds on her acclaimed Still, seen at REDCAT’s 2014 NOW Festival.

JOCELYN REYES: IN-SELF

With highly visceral movement and shape-shifting lighting, dancer-choreographer Jocelyn Reyes plays with the distinction between shadows and physical reality as she explores the nexus between Divine experience and schozophrenia, drawing inspiration from Plato’s allegory of the cave and “sightings” of the Holy Spirit.

THE MOVING ART COLLECTIVE: CEM

A patch-work of sound and movement abstracts the emotional characters and narrative from the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez in CEM, a solo physical-theater piece that examines human interaction and loneliness using gestural language and voice.

SAMPLISTA: MONSTER MASH

Using referential material as both pastiche and parody, Monster Mash uses fantasy animal “furs” which are donned for playful dances and moves that inspire memories of favorite stuffed animals (and a turducken). Four distinct “monsters” make REDCAT their home for the night.
