Studio: Fall 2018

REDCAT’s quarterly program of new works and works-in-progress highlights new forms of dance, theater, music and multimedia performance in a wide-ranging evening that celebrates the vitality of Los Angeles artists making work for the stage. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Meg Wolfe and Juan Parada and features a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

SOLA BAMIS: THE TUTORIAL

Incisive writer and performer Sola Bamis stages her ingenious work The Tutorial as a not-quite-Instagram-ready livestream event and digital litany for Womanist survival in the face of Neoliberalism, Big Tech, Xenophobia and African genocide. Known for her role as Shirley the secretary in Mad Men, Bamis is also a filmmaker and performance artist who brings to life her avatar @poopydiscoop, who is launching a revolutionary online series.

MOHAMMAD AL TAYYEBTHE LIMINAL SPACE AND I

Using video, music, and movement, Palestinian/Jordanian performance artist Mohammad Al Tayyeb draws on personal experiences navigating cultural and gender identity, in light of traditions and complex socio-political challenges. Compelling vignettes connect cultural and political events that have shaped the Arab region with more personal issues related to the queer body.

AUSTYN RICHTECHNICAL FOUL

Austyn Rich’s virtuosic and athletic solo work Technical Foul uses a dynamic choreographic score, while also reveling in the unpredictable nature of chance and impulse. With a series of games and “instant replays,” Rich juxtaposes and connects sports and real life violence while investigating their relationship to black labor.

fabe Dance / MALLORY FABIAN & DARBY KELLEYTHANKS FOR ASKING

Virtuosic dancers and co-choreographers Mallory Fabian and Darby Kelley are inspired by feminine rebellion and a desire for chaos, as they enter into distinctive honest and emotional states. In their bold new duet Thanks for Asking, Fabian and Kelley investigate friendship, solitude, and womanhood, while celebrating their racial differences and ideologies on femininity.

INSTITUT IDGAF: SALUTI, GRACE PALMER: SECRETS OF VIRTUOUS CYCLE MANAGEMENT

“A work about Work—Women's work, dirty work—and the prices paid for a labor of love. Labor pains, losses and gains. Two Working Girls navigate Office Space, as well as the interior spaces they hadn't bargained for, dealing with alienation, violence and disembodiment under the crumbling cubicles of capitalism. Looks like a pump, feels like....@ institut.idgaf” —INSTITUT IDGAF
