Studio: Fall 2017

Studio: Fall 2017

REDCAT's Studio series is an interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Christine Marie and Deena Selenow and features a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

SHAINA LYNN SIMMONSAFRO FUTURO
Writer, activist, and interdisciplinary artist Shaina Lynn Simmons’ AfroFuturo intricately mixes song, performance art and movement for three women to critically investigate hair as a concept of beauty and the connections between the historical, mythological, and contemporary realities of Afro-Cuban and Afro-American women. Directed by Dana Gourrier.

DIANA WYENNBLOOD / SUGAR
Historical perspectives and staggering statistics collide with personal narrative and Shakespearean texts to give embodied expression to the complexities of living with a chronic illness in Blood / Sugar. Creator Diana Wyenn, who has Type 1 diabetes, places her story and her body at the center of the work. Co-writen by Guy Zimmerman.

PHYSICAL PLASTIC: ALARM
Layering movement with extended vocal textures for eight performers, Alarm is a visually striking new music theater work by the collective Physical Plastic, led by director Kestrel Leah and composer Yiannis Christofides. This new work questions boundaries, ownership and power in our current geopolitical scene.

GARY REAGAN + GENNA MORONI: GLIMPSE
In a series of vignettes, Gary Reagan and Genna Moroni, starkly different in their physical build, create highly visceral movement exploring the complexities of androgyny, color, symbiosis and how they are connected, broken and merge their differences.

NOGA YECHIELIRED AND BOILING
Mixing drag, documentary theater, and shadow puppetry, Noga Yechieli’s richly-layered new solo Red and Boiling explores the lives of queer womyn in their communities, and the struggles they face beyond the act of coming out. Co-Directed by Joshua Rivas.

CAROLYN PENNYPACKER RIGGS: GORGON
Building a syncopated harmony, and then incrementally collapsing the multiple melodies into unison, Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs’ new choral / movement performance of protest for five singers explores the power of “NO” inspired by the Greek mythological creature Gorgon. Performed with Janai Amey, Jess Basta, Jiha Lee and Tany Ling.

Funded in part with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
