REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Wilfried Souly and Carole Kim and features a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

SZALT: MARSHMALLOW SEA (WIP)

Jonathan Snipes' musique concrète sets the textural pace for choreographer Stephanie Zaletel's synaptic and gestural movement research. Sound and physicality collide through an energetic examination of dream logic, streams of consciousness, sensational memory, and physical or psychological exits.

THINH NGUYEN: LONG LONG – NO MEANS NO

Nguyen uses a megaphone and traditional Vietnamese folk music forms to conjure and reclaim his feminine superego “Long Long” from childhood memories. With evocative chanting that is part protest and part empowerment, his mantra-song No Means No is an exercise in vulnerability to examine the non-binary gender.

BERNARD BROWN/bbmoves: BOX

Inspired by Henry B. Brown, a slave who mailed himself to freedom in a 3' x 2' box from Richmond, VA to Philadelphia, PA., dancer/choreographer Bernard Brown’s new duet for piano and body lyrically mediates on liberation and confinement – exploring how movement, space and intention can translate to freedom for the black body, mind and spirit. Featuring live music by pianist/composer Steven Gordon.

ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ: EYE * CON * TACT

Exploring mediated and unmediated theatrical conventions and group experiences, performer and facilitator Antonio Rodriguez introduces a series of questions that provoke us to actively learn and unlearn the ways that we metaphorically relate “seeing” to “knowing,” while reflecting on the visibility/invisibility of homelessness and skid row.

DAEUN JUNG: BYOUL:DANCE CREATED BY CHANCE PROCEDURE 2

Inspired by Korean dance forms as well as Merce Cunningham’s “chance operation,” exquisite dancer/choreographer DaEun Jung and singer/composer Melody Shim frame this nuanced performance in a structure that borrows Cunningham’s “throw of the dice” technique and utilizes the basic structure of the Korean alphabet “Hangul.”

WORLDPLAY: NOT ANOTHER DEAF STORY

An ensemble of Deaf actors sign a captivating visual performance – a style unique to Deaf culture. With hearing actors providing the voiced translations simultaneously with the signed performances, Not Another Deaf Story expertly weaves the personal anecdotes from an intergender immigrant Polish woman, a twice-adopted Korean artist and a lone Deaf girl growing up isolated on a farm.
