STUDIO: Fall 2015

Studio: Fall 2015

REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Jmy James Kidd and Pat Payne and offers adventurous audiences a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

DAR & FRIENDSCREATURETUBE

Baby animals and cannibalism coalesce in CreatureTube, a dance-theater piece set to the music of 1960s pop icon and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot. Four performers veer from playful to predatory in this imaginative investigation of the line between violence and play.

GENNA MORONI + THIBAUT EIFERMANBROUHAŸŸHA

With jarring physicality and playfulness, co-choreographers Genna Moroni and Thibaut Eiferman, known for their virtuosic work with Ate9 dANCEcOMPANY, utilize “gaga” dance techniques unleashed to explore how people resist and confront each other in the throes of a struggle.

JOSHUA SILVERSTEINTELL ME I’M PRETTY (LIVING WITH CACOPHONY)

With incisive humor and raw power, comedic performer and beat boxer Joshua Silverstein delivers an explosive mix of storytelling, spoken word, vocal percussion, and hip-hop in a nuanced investigation of the complexities and contradictions in urgent race, gender, and poverty issues.

TUMI JOHNSONAIR HUNGER

Exquisite Nigerian-American dancer and choreographer Tumi Johnson blends evocative original poetry with a movement vocabulary that layers the influences of West African and Contemporary dance forms to explore physical and emotional appetites and the power of meaningful breath.

CAROL KATZDAEDALUS’ DAUGHTER

Carol Katz reimagines the Icarus myth in Daedalus’ Daughter, a visually immersive movement theater work inspired by a family history of madness. Using narration and fragments of original film work, the ensemble navigates between myth and memory.
