Studio: Fall 2014

REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Jessica Emmanuel and Emily Mast, and offers adventurous audiences a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

I AM A BOYS CHOIROR HOW I BECAME AN ICE PRINCESS

Or How I Became An Ice Princess is an interdisciplinary dance-theater duet by Chris DeVita and Adam Rigg, who are members of the collective I AM A BOYS CHOIR. With a fair dose of camp and intense physicality akin to an ice-skating competition or an aerobics class, the duo explores the body myth of the female athlete and the writings of philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler.

JUNG MONEY

Jung Money — Devin KKenny, Def Sound, Ginger Snapz, Jahi Sundance, and Chrysanthe O. — is a group of emcees, back-up dancers, film/video artists, musicians and DJs, exploring the intersections of gender, sexuality, class, race, and cultural capital through a multimedia event that draws on inspirations ranging from hip hop and net culture to the Frankfurt School theorists.

NO)ONE. ART HOUSE: VOYEUR

Voyeur is a collaborative performance and film project created by the recently formed collective No)One Art House. Ramped-up gestural choreography for six dancers is integrated with projected images to explore the theatrical dynamics of the relationships between the performers.

DAVIE-BLUE: PLEASURE FANCY

In Pleasure Fancy, the incisive and hilarious solo performer Davie-Blue reveals superhuman strengths as well as flirty and neurotic tendencies as she tries to imagine the ultimate and absolutely perfect solo performance.

WHYTEBERG: UNLOCKING ROOMS

This poignant visual and choreographic duet by dancer/choreographers Laura Berg and Gracie Whyte blends unique lighting elements and lush and fluid movement to investigate the intrinsic tension between light and darkness and the seen and unseen.

RYAN OBYRNE: THE MENTOR PROJECT

Using rigorous and energetic practice grounded in Alexander technique, The Mentor Project is a ceremonial performance in which solo theater-dance artist Ryan OByrne dramatizes an imagined relationship with a lost hero, the famed theater artist Reza Abdoh (1963-1995).

Funded in part with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
