STUDIO

STUDIO

Curated by Ann Stocking and Hassan Christopher

The Studio series is a curated evening of short works and performances that span the diverse disciplines regularly represented at REDCAT. Works are presented in an informal environment that allows both the artists and audience to experience and explore the creative process. This edition of Studio is curated by Ann Stocking, Actor and solo theater artist, with an MFA in Acting from UCLA; and Hassan Christopher, choreographer, dancer, and Artistic Director of the Company of Strangers. The program includes six original works:

betafish, with brothers Jed and Zack Smith, evokes everyday city life through the use of ambient sounds, improvised percussion, and traditional Indonesian aerophones in a theatrical sound installation.

Dance soloist Lehua Harrison depicts the artist’s battle to find inspiration with moments of meditative spirals, tribal explosions and endless pulls of gravity in Them or Heart.

In POET IN 3 FACES, spoken word/performance artist, LeVan D. Hawkins reacts to a lover's criticism that his work is "too gay."

Seasoned dance artist Lisa K. Lock creates a liquid ritual through a solo dance on point.

Stacy Dawson Stearns and Tim Cummings perform a new dance from a “parallel dimension.” FOUR is the invisible made visible: money is bait, and people are horses. Stearns and Cummings open this realm of imagination to a willing audience.

Blaze Mob, a second-generation reggae ensemble, performs an original selection of songs. The band was founded by three sons of Garth Dennis, one of the original members of Black Uhuru.

Studio was created to give new artists an opportunity to hone their skills and offer established artists a chance to test new material and works-in-progress before an audience. A revolving panel of working artists curates each edition.
