REDCAT's Studio series is an ongoing, interdisciplinary program featuring informal new performance works and works-in-progress. This edition of Studio is programmed by guest curators Jessica Emmanuel and Justin Veach, and offers adventurous audiences a glimpse at projects by Los Angeles artists, including:

VICTORIA MARKS and JOE WESTERLUND: SOLAR DUPLEX

Solar Duplex is a response to the trope of the pas de deux by Alpert Award-winning choreographer Victoria Marks, who captures “un-choreograph-able” movements, connecting a spectrum from sexual pleasure to social dance. To a percussive score by Joe Westerlund, dancers Willy Souly and Alexx Shilling juxtapose their urgent bodies in motion, countering vitality with feebleness and uncertainty.

SHAWN BROWN: IAMI: DEOS, THE MARTYR

This visually immersive and viscerally intoxicating multimedia theater work written and directed by Shawn Brown plays out the complexities of martyrdom in a fantasy world, The Eversphere, where the character Deos and others find themselves after death, and must now reconcile their identities with apparent immortality.

SARAH LEDDY: A BEAUTIFUL GAME

Exploring the ritual aspects of soccer, Sarah Leddy’s ensemble dance-theater work A Beautiful Game propels its six performers — divided into two teams — into a choreographic game in which movement vocabulary excerpted from Twyla Tharp’s 1986 classic “In The Upper Room” is whimsically manipulated using devices such as fouls, replays, and substitutions.

SZALT: F L W R 1

Dancer/choreographer Stephanie Zaletel’s f l w r 1 teeters on the edges of youthfulness and maturity. Zaletel's ensemble, szalt, deploy an incisively rigorous and exhaustive movement vocabulary to emphasize the memories, desires, and humiliations of young love expressed by soloist/physical narrator, Jordan Saenz. This palpable journey magnifies the floundering transitions between girlhood, womanhood, and love.

LEX BROWN: AMERICAN FLAG

In a “live-album” interpretation, singer-songwriter and visual artist Lex Brown poignantly performs a bitingly humorous and politically charged song-cycle ranging from a boisterous dance track about freedom, fun, and global warming to a hymnal ode to the ongoing brutality against people of color.
