Studio: Fall 2008

The latest installment of REDCAT's quarterly series of new work and works-in-progress features dance, theater, multi-media and music performances by Los Angeles area artists. The Fall 2008 edition of Studio was curated by Leilani Chan and Leslie Tamaribuchi, and includes the following six original works:

KAREN ANZOATEGUI: SER
Through the passions and politics of a soccer match, solo theater artist Anzoategui explores the complexities of Latino identity in Los Angeles, and the nuances of being born to Argentine parents in a predominantly Mexican community.

MARSIAN & COMPANY: GROWING UP LINDA -- FUDGIE'S DEATH
Table-top pop-up books are transformed into full-screen cinema in Marsian & Company's neo-noir tale of desperation and depravity surrounding the troubled life of an ice-cream heiress.

DYS-: TAPE MUSIC
Collaborators David Cotner and Sergio Segovia immerse their audience in an unstable darkness for this electro-acoustic creation composed solely from various forms of tape from plumbers tape to measuring tape and more.

KELLY & DAVID with BETTINA HUBBY: UNTITLED FEATHER CHORALE #1
Performed in Bettina Hubby's clothing-homage to Los Angeles' famed Hollyhock House, Kelly & David's 5-cycle choral piece is a visual and vocal collaboration that evolves through abstract melodies, improvised sounds and shadowy imagery.

SHEETAL GANDHI: BAHU-BETI-BIWI (DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, DAUGHTER, WIFE)
With dance, live singing and percussive text, Sheetal Gandhi's powerfully rhythmic performance wraps North Indian music traditions and family characters into a contemporary exploration that glides between humorous portraiture and active resistance.

CHRISTINE MARIE: GROUND TO CLOUD Seamlessly integrating projected shadows of light bulbs, wires and stained glass with live actors and an original score, Christine Marie and her ensemble blend scientific discovery, religious folklore and magical trickery into an incandescent work of expressionist theater.

Funded in part by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
