Tribute to Roscoe Mitchell
Roscoe Mitchell Trio and For People in Sorrow
Roscoe Mitchell Trio and For People in Sorrow
“A veteran bandleader with a commitment to rough-and-tumble interplay.” —The New York Times
Co-presented by the Angel City Jazz Festival
Roscoe Mitchell—composer, reed and woodwind master, and one of the most revered exponents of creative musicmaking—marks his 71st birthday with a special performance by his new trio, with fellow winds player James Fei and percussionist William Winant. A founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the fabled Art Ensemble of Chicago, Mitchell has blazed an iconoclastic trail throughout his prolific career, inventively combining improvisation, European composition forms, African music, and jazz to forge new, often unprecedented styles of sound. The concert opens with a tribute performance of the Art Ensemble’s 1969 album-length masterpiece “People in Sorrow,” re-envisioned by percussionist Alex Cline and played by an all-star group that includes Oliver Lake, Vinny Golia, Zeena Parkins, Dwight Trible and Mark Dresser.
